Sacrament of Confirmation & Reception
βIn the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.β
(Book of Common Prayer, p. 412)
In the Episcopal Church, though Baptism is the complete and full initiation into the Christian faith, we mark our mature commitment to our lives of faith by asking God for renewal, refreshment, and sustenance along our journey of faith.
Those who have not yet been Confirmed in any Christian tradition are eligible for Confirmation. Those who have previously been Confirmed in a similar faith tradition (including Lutheran and Roman churches) may be Received into the Episcopal Church.
Those interested in the Christian faith and considering Confirmation undergo a period of conversation and education, usually under the direction of a member of the clergy.
